Behavioral psychology is a simple but complicated theory regarding anything physically done is a behavior and all behaviors are learned through one median or another.
Those who are behaviorist utilize reinforcement and punishment. Behavioral psychology is taught in almost all basic psychology classes even though the core lessons in behavioral psychology can be very confusing. You must be able to understand people on a text book psychological level as well connection –interaction level. The study of behavioral psychology is all about learning and altering ones behaviors which can be quite messy and intriguing. When you are attempting to modify a behavior you must understand why and how people do things they do and the effects those decisions have on people.
Basically it is believed that emotional as well as mental disorders can be improved through techniques that modify specific behaviors. There are techniques such as behavior modeling and cognitive restructuring that are practiced to modify behaviors.
Although behavior psychology is practiced there is still much to learn about techniques and the exact way to make it work. With all psychology there has to be many tests and practicing of treatments. There are many experimental phases to see what treatments will work and which are not as efficient. There are well known psychologist as well as some that are not so popular whom strongly believe in the practice of behavioral psychology and the benefits is can provide, especially to those who suffer from mental and emotional disorders.
Simply by observing the physical actions, the behaviors of a person can open windows to what is going on with them mentally and emotionally. Questioning why a behavior was done in general or in a particular way sets up the first set of experiments and test results. The results have become increasingly positive when behaviors are coached or corrected consistently. The only reason that many believe behaviorist actions do not work positively is because of the lack of consistency and punishment.
When you are working with someone who already struggles with emotional or mental disorders it can be quite the challenge to keep consistent actions and behaviors. Sometimes they may be fully on board with the treatments and other times they may be completely against even trying. If they understand the actions are to help make them feel better or function better it usually motivates them to be more cooperative. However depending on the severity of the disorders the understanding of the actions may be the problem.
Deciding to use behavioral psychology takes a very large level of dedication and patience. Behavioral psychology has been proven to work when approached appropriately and consistently. It requires constant vigilance as well as ongoing education. Learning about the particular disorder and how it coincides with different behaviors is an ongoing process.
